Do I really need to upgrade my old fuse box?

If your board has rewireable (wire) fuses, no RCD protection, or is showing signs of age or damage, upgrading is strongly recommended for safety — and is often flagged on an EICR.

What’s the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

An RCD protects against electric shock; an MCB protects against overload. An RCBO combines both in one device per circuit, so a fault on one circuit doesn’t take out the rest of the house. We fit RCBOs as standard where appropriate.

Will the power be off while you work?

Yes — the power is off for the bulk of the job while we replace and test the unit. We’ll let you know timings in advance so you can plan around it.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. Every replacement is certified with an Electrical Installation Certificate, backed by our 3-year workmanship guarantee. Where the work is notifiable under the Building Regulations, Building Control approval or notification may also be required and will be discussed before work begins.

When should a consumer unit be replaced?

Replace it if it still has rewirable fuses or no RCD protection, if an EICR has coded it C1 or C2, if breakers trip repeatedly or will not reset, if there are signs of heat damage or buzzing, or if you are adding a large new load such as an EV charger, electric shower or induction hob. A plastic board is normally only a C3 ‘improvement recommended’ on an EICR — an older board that has RCD protection and passes testing does not automatically need replacing, and we will tell you honestly on inspection.
