Replacing an old fuse board with a modern consumer unit is one of the best-value safety upgrades you can make. But how much does it actually cost? Here’s a straight answer for 2026.
Typical cost of a consumer unit replacement
As a rough guide in London, a standard domestic consumer unit replacement usually starts from £595 + VAT. Larger properties, more circuits, or units with individual RCBO protection sit at the higher end. We always give a fixed written price before starting.
What affects the price?
- Number of circuits — more circuits means more protective devices and labour.
- RCBOs vs RCDs — individual RCBO protection per circuit costs a little more but is far better (a fault on one circuit won’t take out the whole house).
- Condition of the wiring — if faults are found when we test, they may need fixing before the new board is signed off.
- Extras — surge protection (SPD) or arc-fault detection (AFDD) where recommended.
What’s included in the price?
A proper consumer unit replacement includes the new unit and devices, isolating and reconnecting every circuit, testing the whole installation, and issuing an Electrical Installation Certificate with notification to building control under Part P. That certificate matters — it’s your proof the work is safe and compliant.
Do you need to replace yours?
If your board still uses rewireable (wire) fuses, has no RCD protection, or was flagged on an EICR, it’s worth replacing. See our consumer unit replacement service for details.
Common questions
Most domestic consumer unit replacements are completed in a single day. We isolate the power, fit and wire the new unit, test every circuit and issue your certificate.
If it has rewireable fuses, no RCD protection, or is damaged or overheating, upgrading is strongly recommended for safety — and is often required to pass an EICR.
Yes — every replacement comes with an Electrical Installation Certificate and building control notification, backed by our 3-year workmanship guarantee.
