Outdoor electrics open up your garden — lighting, power for tools, a socket for the BBQ, or a supply to a shed or garden office. But outside, safety standards are stricter. Here’s how it’s done properly.

Why outdoor electrics are different
Everything outside must be weatherproof (suitably IP-rated) and RCD protected, and supply cables buried outdoors must be armoured or properly protected. Using indoor kit outside is a real shock and fire risk.
It’s notifiable
Outdoor electrical work and new circuits are notifiable under Part P and must be certified — which we handle. See our guide to Part P.
Powering a garden room
A garden office or studio usually needs its own supply run from the house, with its own small consumer unit. We design and install it — pair it with our home office tips.
Common questions
Yes — outdoor sockets and fittings must be weatherproof (suitably IP-rated) and RCD protected. Standard indoor sockets are not safe or legal to use outside.
Yes — all outdoor circuits must have RCD protection, and buried supply cables must be armoured or properly protected. We install everything to standard.
