A little hum can be normal
A very faint hum from a board under load isn’t unusual. But a clear buzzing, crackling or sizzling noise is not normal and needs checking.
What causes buzzing
- A loose connection — the most serious cause. Loose terminals arc, buzz and generate heat, which is a fire risk.
- An overloaded circuit — a device or circuit drawing near its limit.
- A failing MCB or RCD — worn internal contacts.
What to do
Don’t ignore it. If you also notice heat, a burning smell, or scorch marks at the board, switch off the main switch if it’s safe to do so and call an electrician immediately — this points to arcing.
