Solar PV is a great investment, but it’s not just panels on a roof. The electrical side is what turns sunlight into usable, safe power in your home. Here’s what’s involved.
What the electrical work covers
- Inverter — converts the panels’ DC output into AC electricity your home can use.
- Connection to your consumer unit — a dedicated, protected circuit tying the system into your electrics.
- Isolation — DC and AC isolators so the system can be safely shut down.
- Metering — to measure generation and, where relevant, export.
- Certification & notification — the installation is certified and your network operator (DNO) is notified.
Your consumer unit matters
An older or full consumer unit may need upgrading to safely accommodate the solar connection — see our consumer unit page.
Adding battery storage
Many solar systems are paired with a home battery so you can store what you generate and use it in the evening. That’s more electrical connection work again.
After installation
It’s worth having the wider installation checked with an EICR if it hasn’t been inspected recently — a solar system is only as safe as the electrics it connects to.
Common questions
The electrical connection should be done by a competent electrician; full solar installs are usually carried out by an MCS-certified installer where you want to access certain schemes. We handle the electrical side and consumer unit work.
Yes — your Distribution Network Operator must be notified of a solar (and battery) installation. This is part of a proper installation.
